A Brief History of Modern Aviation

It might be said that modern aviation began on November 21, 1783 in France when two brothers went aloft in a hot air balloon. The true beginning of the era is usually considered to be December 17, 1903 when the Wright Brothers flew the first heavier than air powered plane a few hundred feet off a sand dune at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. This first plane could not fly much further because it was almost impossible to control it. In the next decade the wide spread use of ailerons made aircraft manageable and by the outbreak of World War I, aircraft had developed enough for the famous dogfights that took place during that war.

Although aircraft had come a long way during this time, they were not large enough to carry freight or passengers. A type of lighter than air craft called a dirigible was considered more practical for that purpose, and was seen as the future of aviation. By the mid 1930’s, the Douglas DC-3 was introduced and became the first practical airliner. At the end of the same decade, the Hindenburg Disaster ended the age of the dirigible.

Once again, it was a war that boosted the aviation age. World War II was a spur to a tremendous technological spurt in aviation. By the end of the war, we had large bombers and jet aircraft as well as rocket power. In the years after the war commercial airliners expanded rapidly connecting the entire world. The introduction of the Space Shuttle opened the idea of space as aviation’s next frontier.

Another area in which aviation has expanded recently is the area of personal aircraft. Pilot training has become available in small airports that provide the aviation supplies needed to service small personal aircraft. In addition to pilot training, the small airports sell pilot supplies and aircraft supplies such as the new models of David Clark headsets that provide communication while providing ear protection. It is possible to have your own plane kept in hangers in these small airports, or even to rent planes there.

In the coming years, aviation is expanding in two different directions. The first push is out into space, but the second area of expansion is the area of personal aircraft. In the years to come, it is possible that the day will arrive when a private aircraft is about as common as a privately owned motor vehicle and the globe will shrink a little more as more and more people take to the air.

I Have Discovered That Sleeping in the Airport Becomes a Way of Life

I travel a lot for business and for pleasure. It seems that my schedule seems to find me traveling approximately every two months or so. At any given time, I may be traveling more often or less often but the fact of the matter is always the same: I know travel. In fact, as I write this, I am sitting at a client’s office in Charlotte, NC.

I also happen to be one the unluckiest travelers ever. If you are reading this and may have the opportunity to travel with me, let’s hope YOU have some luck because when it comes time to jet set to somewhere new, my luck runs out… I’ve had lost bags, missed flights, horrible weather delays, rental cars that weren’t paid for (but should have been), hotel rooms given to me that already had people inside of them (no joke!), cell phone service quitting… You get the idea.

I’ve decided to put together some helpful tips for you so that you can avoid having my luck and if you do find yourself with a case of bad luck, you can be prepared for it.

1. Make sure there is at least 2 hours for your layover regardless of where you are traveling.

If you travel a lot, you know that flights are hardly ever on time. Most run at least 30 minutes behind while some are an hour or more behind. There can be delays with the plane coming in, delays with attendants not being in the airport yet, equipment delays, safety check delays, etc. When booking your travel, always schedule a two hour layover regardless of where you are traveling. You may be thinking, “Do I really have to spend that extra time in the airport?” but speaking from my own experience, it will actually save you time if you find yourself missing your next connection.

2. Check to see if the flight you are booked on is the last flight out – if you happen to miss your connection due to delays, you want to make sure you can always hop onto another plane.

This has happened to me more times than I can count and as a result, I’ve spent A LOT of time sleeping overnight, usually alone, in the airport. Most recently, after coming home from Las Vegas and flying from LV to Newark, NJ, I found myself delayed due to weather and once I reached Newark, I had missed the last flight out to Ottawa. When my husband and I traveled to New York City, we got caught in the great snow storm of 2006 and slept in both La Guardia and the Philadelphia airports. We arrived home two days later than we should have. When booking your flight, if you can, book a mid-afternoon flight so that you always have the option to jump on another plane if you miss yours.

3. Pack a good carry-on or just carry-on one bag (depending on how long you are traveling) so that if you do get stuck in the airport or having to spend the night at hotel, you are prepared.

I never used to do this. I suppose I thought I was invincible. But, after traveling so often and having so many travel delays, I got smart and began to pack a really great carry-on. In my carry-on, I make sure I have: toothbrush and toothpaste, change of underwear (yes, this is vital), shampoo (travel size will do), baby wipes, a really good book and an MP3 player. If you’re a girl, I also recommend packing a small cosmetics bag. Having this stuff on you while you travel will save you so much stress and will ensure that even if you spend hours in the airport (sleeping over or otherwise), you’ll arrive at your destination refreshed.

4. Always carry cash on you – even on the way home. That way, if you do get delayed, you have cash to grab dinner or a taxi to a nearby hotel.

If you’re anything like me, I tend to “forget” about carrying cash with me on the way home. I always think, “I’m just heading home, what am I going to need?” Well, I’ve learned my lesson and now, I always carry cash while traveling. If you need a cab or you need to grab dinner at someplace where they do not accept plastic, you need to be prepared. Having a bit of cash on you all the time will save you a lot of stress and potential hunger pains!

US International Travel Restrictions

If you are planning travel between US, Canada or Mexico by air or sea, be prepared to present your passport. The same rules apply for the Caribbean and Bermuda. If you are planning business travel, a ski trip, Spring Break, family vacation or warm weather excursion, be prepared to carry a federally recognized identification to enter the US, even if you are a US citizen. The same rules will apply to roads and land border crossings in 2008.

Beginning January 8, 2007 anyone traveling by air or sea to or from the United States and Canada or Mexico must carry a passport or other federally recognized identification to return to the United States.

These new rules also apply to U.S. citizens entering from Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

On January 1, 2008 the rules will be extended to all border crossings, including those on land. This new requirement will also affect certain foreign nationals who currently are not required to present a passport to travel to the United States. Most Canadian citizens, citizens of British Overseas Territory of Bermuda and Mexican citizens will be affected by the implementation of this requirement.

Check your passport and make sure that it is current, or get one if you do not have it already. Getting a passport takes time. The Passport Services Office provides information and services to American citizens about how to obtain, replace or change a passport. A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. Only the U.S. Department of State has the authority to grant, issue or verify United States passports.

To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license. This also applies if your passport has expired and is not in your possession, if it was issued more than 15 years ago, if it was issued when you were under 16 years of age, or if your passport is being replaced because it was lost or stolen.

Plan ahead and allow at least eight to ten weeks to process your request for a new Passport. All the more reason to make sure that you have a current Passport now. You may have the opportunity or need to travel, and may not have more than two months to wait for a Passport. Acceptance facilities include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, and 1 Gateway City Agency, which serve customers who are traveling within 2 weeks (14 days), or who need foreign visas for travel. Appointments are required to request expedited processing.

Passports can also be used as identification for domestic travel within the US. * Bus- This is located in front of the A and B terminals at the airport. Many of the times are similar to those that are used by the train. This is known as the aero-bus and can be a very efficient means of transport.

* Private transfers- This is essentially a limousine service to use while you are in the city. It is used primarily by people who are looking for private tours or those that are looking to find special trips in a private car around the city.

Travel Insurance Rates

Probably the biggest factors when calculating travel insurance premiums is the length of the cover required. If you are taking a two-week vacation, there is a much lower risk than if you are making a yearlong voyage around the world. There’s a good chance that you have wondered about the unfairness of airline fares in some point in your life. Well, I certainly have, and constantly at that. I make it a point to ask my co passengers about the fares they paid for the privilege of traveling together each time I get into a flight. In my experience, they have all provided different amounts. The difference in airline fares that a man and his co-passenger in the next seat paid was vast enough to straddle a couple of hundred dollars in one memorable case. Our discussion led to a very amusing fight that the cabin crew was hard pressed to break up.

Airline fares can really be atrocious. I know this because I have booked my tickets at various times. I have made my bookings well in advance when time has been on my side. There were also times when I have been forced to make my bookings at the last minute especially on my business travels. You may not believe me, but there are times when I have paid more expensive airline fares for my bookings at leisure than the fares I paid for my last minute rush.

I have a friend in the airline industry who explained to me about how the system actually works. An airline operator usually has a basic cost that they need to cover in order to make their trip profitable. This is a low figure that includes fuel charges, service charges, salaries and equipment. This base component, the profit margin of the airlines, the taxes and surcharges imposed by the airport and finally, the commissions charged by various tourist operators or booking agents are all included in the airline fares we pay.

The affordability of airline fares depends almost entirely on the premium that an agent is going to charge. An agent may decrease the commission you have to pay out if that person is someone whom you deal with on a fairly regular basis. However, you have to be prepared to pay through your nose if you are dealing with the agent for the first time.
